Heave Away 01:50
Heave away, Heave away, Heave away Heave away from the morning light Heave away, Heave away, Heave away We sail into the dead of night There's nothing left to fear but the coming of the dawn There's nothing left to know but we shall soon be Away, away, away Heave away from the morning light Heave away, Heave away, Heave away We sail into the dead of night There's nothing left to fear but the rose fingers of dawn There's nothing left to know but we shall soon be gone.

The Devil come around But he don't know where to go no more Knock on the black people's door Knock on the president's sister's door But he don't know where to go no more The Angels come flapping down But they don't know where to go no more Knock on the black people's door Knock on the judge's mother's door But they don't know where to go no more Then Jesus Christ come climbing down After so long nailed to a board His wrists and ankles are so sore Hear him tapping on every door "Could you help a man so poor?" No no no. Me, I'm standing 'round In the shadows where the wind don't blow See the temples crumbling down See the new ones up and glow Put your horn in your mouth and blow, man, blow.

Fire Lake 00:45
I was sitting by a fire lake I was sitting by a fire lake Sit and listen to it boil Sit and listen to it boil I was smitten by a fire lake I was smitten by a fire lake Sit and listen to 'em boil Sit and listen to 'em boil

The tendons attach the muscle to the bone and the ligaments hold the bones together. Witness my hand as evidence of this Witness my deeds in horror I'm blowing little holes in the testimony of life with every breath I take Witness my blasphemy breathing life into empty nothing Nah nah nah nah nah Nah nah nah nah nah nah.

about

Pictures of Villainy was/is the working title of a sci-fi rock-opera about a spider trapped on an ice cube melting in a cocktail glass who imagines itself a great pirate sailing away from the sunlight that would be its doom. The project is represented by the first song here, Heave Away. Two other songs from this project will appear in releases later this year.

The second song, Devil Comes Around, takes its first lines from a mad woman who eyed me up on Lenox Avenue and sang a song that I think was meant to envoke the White Devil trope. She literally sang these words as I walked by. I fumbled for my little recording device but was late, instead committing them to memory as best I could. (Dear mad woman on Lenox Avenue circa 2012, if you are reading this and have some copyright quibble, I'm all ears.)

I have no memory of writing or recording Fire Lake.

Witness my Hand, like the title of Deeds of Trust, comes from legal terms that incorporate language of old to frame transactions of today. I've taken it a step further, however, and -- while invoking the Heave Away theme -- breakdown the structure of Mankind's great tool to expose the abomination of action, even seemingly positive or passive activity. The Deeds of Trust cover art also, obviously, refers forward to this song title.
